Homonyms, Homographs and Homophenes Homonyms are words that have same sound but different meaning. There are Two Types of Homonyms 1. HOMOGRAPHS • These are the words with same spelling but different meanings. Example: Tear means to pull something apart with force. It also means a drop coming out of a person's eye when they cry. • Bear (endure) bear (animal) • Lie (lie down) lie (untrue) • Bank (where money is kept) bank (river bank) • Right (proper) right (hand) • Dear (beloved) dear (animal) • Nail (finger nail) nail (iron made object) 2. HOMOPHONES These are words with the same sound but with different spellings and meanings.
