Homonyms, Homographs and Homophenes
Homonyms are
words that have same sound but different meaning.
There are Two Types of Homonyms
1. HOMOGRAPHS
•These are the
words with same spelling but different meanings.
Example: Tear means to
pull something apart with force. It also means a drop coming out of a person's
eye when they cry.
• Bear (endure) bear
(animal)
• Lie (lie down) lie (untrue)
• Bank (where
money is kept) bank (river bank)
• Right (proper) right (hand)
• Dear (beloved) dear (animal)
•Nail (finger nail) nail
(iron made object)
2. HOMOPHONES
These are words with the same sound but with different spellings and meanings.
Example: ‘Compliment’ means a polite expression of praise or admiration and ‘Complement’ means a thing that contributes extra features to something else.

•New Knew
•One won
•Nay neigh
•Know no
